I am thinking that dual landing areas, one at each end of the field, is too ambitious. It is true that our soaring field is designed to be bidirectional to accommodate the wind conditions with dual winch turnarounds at each end of our 750ft field. However, I feel building landing areas at each end would prove to be prohibitively expensive and more than we can execute in the time we have to complete it (yet to be determined).

At the (SC)2 board meeting it was agreed that;
1. VVRCF must have a landing surface to get planes off the sand.
2. VVRCF could entertain the concept of incorporating a centrally located landing area halfway down the winch lines and off to one side. This area should be about 60ftx100ft. We need to do some measuring here to see how much room we have for this on the field. I'll start tomorrow to research the layout.

Does anyone have any idea what a 6000 sq ft area of Sod would cost? I would donate the lawnmower and organize a system of maintenance. I think this would be much cheaper than anything artificial. Petromatt (is that how you spell it) is out as it tears on landing with skids.

As it turns out we will probably not have water to take care of Sod in our landing area.
Consequently, we are moving toward used indoor carpet as a landing surface.
Some objections currently exist concerning carpet, but I am dealing with them. Aprox. 300 sq yds of carpet have been placed in a pile near the landing zone and will be laid after some tests near the end of March.

There is non-potable water available for the field, it would have to be piped and sprinkler heads installed and it is possible to get the sod watered, there is a variety or solar control systems available for the watering system. It has been in the plans since day one of conception of the field and agreed by the landlord. To put carpet down would not be the best suitable and visual application for what you want to achieve. A carpet installation would not fit the conception of “The Field of Dreams”,  let’s not make the park turn into a hap hazard installation of hodgepodge concepts. Go back to the planning committee and the construction committee to make proper additions to the field.

I've got a question.

Have you tried landing on the petromat? I landed my combat planes on it several times last week and it was fine.

Thanks, Terry

Terry, I have...the material tears when a skeg arresting device is used. The rubber mat material on the nose of the plane is ok if the landing isn't too agressive.

I agree and will probably abandon any material being put down. This will be discussed at the April Board meeting. Rick

It seems that the Lake Arrowhead water district has changed their mind about us using the non-potable water. They are not going to stop us from watering the trees with it, but evidently they don't want us watering any grass with it. This has been discussed at the last two meetings and I believe it is in the minutes. I hear they are considering hooking us up to the well, but I haven't heard any more about that.

It's a bummer, we had plans for a lot of grass.

Blessings, Terry

Well this may not be dead!!!! We saw Arrowhead looking at the well recently and there may be something up with the availability of water for grass....we'll see!!! More later.
